Peril the First
*UPDATES ARE LINKED IN THE SIDEBAR, THANKS!*
I've decided to take part in the R.I.P. III challenge this year. I haven't been reading enough, and have quite a few books that fit the theme, that I want to spend a little time with.
Peril the First: Read any four books from any scary sub-genre you choose. Challenge runs until October 31. Yay! nothing is out of bounds? I've got all kinds of goodies on the shelves? How can I stop at four?!!
Apparently, I don't even have to commit to my four books upfront, but instead post a "pool" of potentials here, and read whatever strikes my fancy. Book reviews are then posted here at R.I.P.ing Yarns.
And what would a scary challenge be without scary books?
Heh, posted this without my pool, so here goes:
1. Absolute Sandman Vol III - Neil Gaiman
This has been sitting on the shelf waiting for some time to really savor it. But Vol. IV comes out soon so I must commit!
2. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
I've read this before several times and to me is the quintessential "scary" story. It's time to read it again.
3. 1602 - Neil Gaiman
Witches, world endings, emergent superheroes, conspiracy, what more could you ask for?
4. Strange Roads - Peter S. Beagle
Sweet little chapbook of stories inspired by the art of Lisa Snellings-Clark.
5. The Gunslinger: Dark Tower I - Stephen King
I'm almost embarrassed to admit I've never read a single thing written by Stephen King until this year when I read his Gunslinger graphic novel. It's time.
6. Robota - Orson Scott Card
Picked this up on the sale shelf at Powell's. The artwork is stunningly beautiful and intricate.
7. The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman
Gaiman's newest book comes out next week, YAY! Just in time and it must be in the pool. I might also have to include here The Dangerous Alphabet - Gaiman and Grimly. It seems like it would make for a fun and spooky evening.
8. Frankenstein - Dean Koontz
Why yes, more Frankenstein. What happens after the monster runs off and was never seen again? Wait, what's that outside my window?
9. Speaks the Nightbird - Robert McCammon
I liked the cover. Plus, witches. Bonus.
Rumor has it that this challenge is poppet approved. You can never have too many poppets, and you can never have too much poppet approval. At the moment my poppet approval rating is quite low as they tell me there have not been nearly enough outings.
The challenge and my posts and reviews in the challenge will be linked in the sidebar. Soon, my poppets, soon.

9 bottles washed up on the shore:
I've never heard of this challenge but what a good idea!! :D I read Dracula last year; I highly recommend that. I need to read Frankenstein. This would also be the perfect opportunity to finally get around to reading some H.P. Lovecraft! :D
Absolute Sandman, Vols I-III sitting on my shelf unread. Oh the shame. Vol. IV preordered and I have yet to even to anything, but scratch the surface of Vol. I. Oi.
Frankenstein, good stuff. May have to dig out my copy where ever the heck it is. Probably has cobwebs on it.
You and your darn Powell's. I must needs to get back to Portland and properly spend the day wandering through it. One hour wandering in a buzzed state does not make for the most productive book perusing.
M ~ any excuse for good reading, you should do it!
LK ~ Just be sure if you do get back to P-town, you give me the 10 minute warning so we can all get together for that drink. :)
His gunslinger books are about the only things I haven't read by him! My favorite? The Stand.
Woohoo!
the original Frankenstein and Dracula are excellent
Oh yes, this challenge is definitely Poppet approved! I am so glad you are participating. Your pool of books is fantastic!
I am so behind on reading my Absolute Sandman's! I'm excited about the final book being on its way and hopefully will get around to reading mine soon...it has been too long since I've read the entire run of Sandman.
J, I've been assured I must start with Dark Tower. I'm skeered of Stephen King, but I'm finally gonna do it. eek!1!!
G, I started Frankenstein today, even though I've read it twice before, I had forgotten what a fantastic book it is. Yay RIP challenge!
CV, This is so awesome, and I'm glad you're hosting the challenge! Sandman was actually my intro to "horror." (I don't count Dean Koontz, LOL!)
So, have you read Sandman before or is this your first time going through it?
I'm a Sandman virgin. Heh. I first heard of it through Wil Wheaton's blog of all places. My hubby bought me Absolute Sandman Vol I for Xmas. Good job!
Loving the push to READ! I have some photos to take and reviews to write. A few more pages in Frankenstein, then on to The Graveyard Book.
